Oh how I adore these three toddlers whom I have had the joy of photographing on more than one occasion!! This occasion was an open house hosted by {H}'s mama where she asked me to do some quick mini sessions.

First up was {H} who I've been photographing since she was only a few days old! It's so much fun for me to see her grow up before my lens and to see some of the same faces I saw way back in her newborn session.

Next was {M} who I've also photographed since she was just a baby. I love Miss {M}'s serious faces...they are some of my favorite photographs. While she can be serious {M} is also fun-loving and quite a character! We captured some fun smiles playing peek-a-boo too.

Last was Mr. {J} who just this past summer spent some time before my lens with his family. He took some convincing to do this session but after all was said and done I'm pretty sure he had fun!

This session began with sweet {K} running to me with a big hug ready! The best part...this was the first time we had met. At that moment, I knew we would have fun together and I wasn't disappointed. I had a great time meeting and spending the afternoon with {K} and her parents as we captured some long overdue family portraits. Here are just a few of my favorites from our time together:

During Gold Rush Days in Old Sac the boys had the opportunity to pan for gold. After they found lots of "gold" they cashed it in for "money" that they could use to buy goods at the local stores. They bought things like jewels from the jeweler, candy, marbles, and shells...it was a fun day for all!

I had so much fun with {N} and his mommy as we spent the morning together capturing his precious smiles, silly faces, and the sweet boy interests that represent him as a big three year old! (Now that he's a member of the three year old club he will be added to the family wall of three year old fame.) {N} was so excited to wear his new special shirt for his portraits and I was excited that he was excited!!! Best of all, the location was perfect for exploring and discovering things that little boys love to find. (Read: rocks, sticks, water!)

My big boy's first day of preschool. He had a hard time holding his chalkboard AND his little brother's hand but he made it work! It warms my heart because I didn't even ask them to hold hands. Notice the football in the photo? That would be little brother's contribution.

My oldest is getting ready to start preschool tomorrow morning. I am so excited for him and still a bit sad that this milestone is already upon us. Only one more year and he'll spend a majority of his childhood in a classroom. But no need to think about that tonight. Tonight I am excited for him! He is ready for school and I know that he will do well!

Today we had a back to school session, just the two of us, at the cutest little schoolhouse where I attended preschool when I was 4 years old. I had visions of getting pictures of {N} sitting on the same steps that I sat on for my class picture 30 some odd years ago. And although a lot has changed over the years (for example, the steps are not exactly the same and the playground seems much smaller) the little schoolhouse still looks just as I remember it. It was where I remember singing "He's got the Whole World in His Hands" and "If You're Happy and You Know it". Where I helped ring the old fashioned school bell, won a goldfish at the school carnival, and dressed up as a tooth fairy for the Halloween parade. Where I LOVED playing in the real, full size, non-operational, gutted out car that was on the playground and learned to swing all by myself!

I have fond memories of preschool and as my little man begins his own new adventure tomorrow I hope he is blessed with precious memories too!

While I was working on the computer processing some photos this week I overheard {N} and {L} gathering chairs and food for a "meeting" they were having at the trampoline right behind me. After the table was set I heard {N} say, "OK, now let's pray and thank God for our food." At that point I jumped up grabbing the camera in front of me and started shooting! Unfortunately, that caught {L}'s attention and he quickly lost focus but I was able to capture {N} in this tender moment talking to his God.

These are the precious moments that I adore capturing in my little boys' lives.

{N} has been dressing himself for quite a while now but just recently he has been more into dressing up. For weeks he would come out of his room in the morning and after naps wearing his train engineer overalls (from his Halloween costume last year!). When we would get ready to leave the house he was always good about changing into "going out of the house" clothes but would often ask if he could wear them again at naptime. Recently, he found one of his "church" shirts hanging in his closet and a tie from a few Easters back and now faithfully gets dressed each morning in them. This is the face (and outfit) I see each morning when I awake. The other day he told me that he was all dressed and ready to go to work. I'm curious to see what he comes up with next!

Not too long ago I got together with a few fellow photographers and a friend of mine for a fun creative session. Denise and I have been talking about her idea for photos with her husband, Jim ever since last summer. We finally scheduled a date and once it arrived we spent 5+ hours shooting away. We were all exhausted but excited at the end of the session. I had so much fun processing these and since I couldn't decide which images to leave out I'm posting ALL of my favorites!

Thanks for hanging in there for our marathon session, Denise and Jim. You were such good sports and Jim you've earned the husband of the year award for your patience alone!!

This session was dear to my heart because I've known this family for over 20 years! Hollie has been a dear friend of mine since high school, throughout college and beyond. She has been someone that I can pick up with and talk to no matter how much time has past. She was a part of my wedding and I had the privilege of being a part of hers. I remember her children being born and now they're growing so quickly! Because of our friendship her family was always accepting of me and made me feel like a part of it. Looking back, I can't believe that 20 years have past. I am blessed to have known this family so well and honored to photograph them.

Valerie and I have been planning this session over email for months! I was so excited about it that I woke up the morning of with new creative ideas for their session. This family was so easy to get to know and I enjoyed every minute of our time together. They were such troopers as we spent the better part of the morning at the park, then down by the river, and finally we pulled out the backdrops for some studio shots too. I hope that they are pleased with the images that we were able to capture. They are definitely some of MY new faves!!

Today's the last day of the Clickin Moms scavenger hunt. I've been busy over the past two weeks (I started two weeks late!) hunting for all sorts of items from a chinchilla (found it!) to a bidet (need to find it!) to a mezzaluna knife (had to google that one and I'm still looking!). We just returned from a little vacation to Santa Barbara where we stayed with some dear friends. While we were there I spent some time doing a session with their youngest daughter. {J} has two older brothers whom I've known since they were her age and although this was the first time I've really had the opportunity to get to know her it was like she was instantly a part of our family. {J} is a free spirit with lots of energy and excitement. She turned 8 just a few days ago and I enjoyed capturing her playful, sweet, and fun personality!

I was so excited to do this session because not only did I have a lot of ideas for it but the {C} family also had plenty of ideas in mind! From the location to the heirloom quilt to the adorable shoes on now one-year-old {H} they were overflowing with great ideas. We enjoyed exploring the location and incorporating all we had planned. I had a great time playing with siblings {E}, {B}, and baby {G} the other day! Big sister {E} is such a sweet hearted little girl and I enjoyed getting to know her as we talked about catching one of the adorable baby ducklings in the pond nearby. {B} just turned two last week and I had fun chasing him around in an attempt to capture him in all his 2 year old spunkiness! (He definitely gave me a run for my money.) Little baby {G} was SO GOOD! He hung out taking everything in and was just happy to be there. And I was happy to have another sweet baby face to photograph.

We visited Raley Field this week for the first "Mommy & Me" day and the boys had a blast hitting balls, running the bases, playing in the dugouts, and sitting in the stands. It was so cool to step out onto a big time baseball field. The boys were so small in comparison to the field and I enjoyed capturing every minute of adventure that I could. I love this image because of the wonder and anticipation that it holds. Let's play ball boys!!

Little {M} turned one at the beginning of this year but due to all the crazy cold weather and the illness that came with it we waited until the weather was warmer and the sun was shining again to capture her one year old photos. I've had the pleasure of photographing {M} and her family on a couple of different occasions and I just love this family! They are fun-loving and real and I laugh every time I'm with {M}'s mama! Little Miss {M} is no exception. She has such a fun and spunky spirit and she is always ready to go! We all had fun watching her enjoy her delicious cupcake for the cake smash photos. Little Miss {M} I've enjoyed watching you grow and capturing your precious eyes and smiles. Thanks for the hugs...they're the best!

Believe it or not, this image of my family on easter sunday was captured with a tripod, self-timer, and ONE take! There's something to be said for the first shot. Occasionally, my best images are the very first ones I take or within the first 20 minutes when everyone is fresh and ready to go.

This has become one of my favorite images of our family. The smiles on my boys just warm my heart. Way to go boys!

The boys and I attended the mom's group egg hunt this week. Although it was quite difficult capturing each of them individually hunting for eggs as they were running in opposite directions of the park I was able to capture a nice hand-holding, basket toting, smile attempting image of the day. I love my boys!

A dear friend invited me to do some spring mini sessions at an Open House she was hosting last week. I enjoyed spending the morning chatting with friends and shooting away at these adorable little faces.

You'll recognize {H}'s sweet little face from here. I was SO excited about the lighting in her big sister's room and {H} was such a willing subject.

Little {O} was a busy one! He is nonstop motion and fun. {O} enjoyed his mommy's songs and I was in love with his curls and gorgeous eyes.

Precious {B} was my lighting model. She was loving on a baby that she found and was just content to bask in the sunlight sporting her new favorite hat.

Miss {E} was modeling one of the headbands that {O}'s mommy was selling. Aren't they adorable? Miss {E} is now the proud owner of this one.

A good friend made {N} a super hero cape for his birthday and I immediately planned on taking him out to get some 4 year old shots wearing it. I also decided that with all my ideas for his 4 year old session I needed to split it up into different days to avoid turning him into a camera avoiding grump-a-saurus who would be telling me where to put my camera if I wasn't careful! On this day, we had fun running, hiding and playing in the tall grass and with his sidekick (aka little brother) in tow {N} was ready to use his super powers to save the day!

I was so excited for this session with two week old baby {C}. After my session with his mama I couldn't wait to meet this little guy! {C} was tiny at roughly 6 pounds the day of our session and he was quite a trooper as he tried to sleep while we attempted to position him in all sorts of fun ways. I am always amazed at how newborns can (and will) sleep anywhere. It makes my job so much fun as they get their zzzzz's and I get my chance to be creative with different angles and poses.

Big sister {N} joined us again and she was so sweet comforting her new baby brother when he was not so happy.

Thanks again {N} for allowing me to spend some time with you and your precious children. I throughly enjoyed our time together and can't wait to watch little {C} grow.

The boys love it when Daddy comes home. They usually run to the garage door and wait for him to park the car before they run out to greet him. They have frequently requested "putting" (the only golf skills that can be practiced indoors) with Daddy as the featured activity while I prepare dinner. But, just recently they have been asking Daddy to play the guitar with them. This evening I found all three of my boys on our bed playing happily with their instruments of choice: Daddy on the guitar, Noah on the ukelele, and Luke on the (modified) recorder. I love the sound of that!

With the little bit of sunshine this week I took the boys out to snap a few sunshine shots. I wanted to practice different angles with the sun and try to get some sun rays peeking out from behind them. My little man was very cooperative and actually (for once!) wanted me to take pictures of him. This is my favorite image from the day!

In honor of Valentine's Day I had a mini session with the boys and my new festive backdrop. They did a pretty good job of listening and I was actually happy to hear them arguing over who was going to be in the picture! (You see, most of the time they are running from me and my camera or showing my camera how great the back of their heads look.) We got some fun shots and this one stood out to me the most. They decided that they wanted to wear their rain boots for the last few photos and this pose was actually Noah's idea. I caught Luke taking a peek at his big brother just to make sure he was doing it the right way. Can't you just feel the love?

This past week my (first) baby, Noah, turned 4 and we celebrated with his choice of a train party. The best part of this day for me was witnessing Noah pour out love (with hugs, kisses, and kind words) to friends and family as he obviously enjoyed his day and felt loved himself. Noah decided he wanted to have a camp-out in his room the other night and wanted us to move his mattress into the tent so he could sleep under the (glow-in-the-dark) stars. He ended up sleeping in the tent on his mattress for 3 days (naps) and nights surrounded by cars, books, and toys. Luke was also very excited about the set up and I found them playing "camping" together often throughout the week. Brothers make the best playmates!

I was so excited for this session! It was my first maternity session and I had a lot of ideas for it. Knowing that I needed to build up my portfolio with baby bellies I had asked a friend if she wouldn’t mind being my model. {N} brought along her beautiful daughter and we spent hours clicking away. It was my first attempt at shooting and editing in RAW and let me just say that I will never go back. The control you have with editing a RAW image is unmatched. I only wish I had braved it sooner.

Luke loves eating. He would eat all day long if we let him. But even more than eating Luke loves being active. In fact, the position you see him in below is the one we see him in more often than not. On this particular day he was enjoying a snack and saying, "Hello!" in his best 2 year old voice (replace the L sound with a W sound-I couldn't figure out how it should be spelled)!

Our home has become party central! Daddy got Guitar Hero for Christmas (from Noah & Luke...it was their idea, kind of.) and the boys ask if we can play every night after dinner. Because no party is a party without loud music John makes sure that our house is rockin'. The boys fight over who gets the "real" guitar (seen in the picture below) or the "air" guitar (a blow up guitar) and they enjoy playing along. The coveted guitar is, of course, the "real" one. Luke won the battle the other night and was caught rockin' out with Daddy. I especially like the way he holds the guitar...he definitely has a style all his own!

Both of my boys are blanket boys. Luke prefers the corner of the blanket and his thumb and Noah favors the tags. When Noah was just a toddler we would often sew the tags back on when they fell off. In the past three years, Noah has worn down one of the tags so it is just strings hanging on but the favorite tag has persevered. This week, it fell off! And our big (almost) four year old decided that he was OK without it. As of today, the tag continues to keep a mighty distance from the "bydoe" (Noah's name for his blanket) as our little man is growing up.

Greetings 2010! This new year will bring some changes to my blog and photography "hobby". I'm excited to announce that I will be officially starting up my photography business this month! I am currently in the process of designing a brand new website and will be posting the link as soon as it's up and ready to go so stay tuned. I look forward to a year filled with many memories captured and smiles shared. May 2010 be filled with many blessings for you and your family!

Every week in 2010 I will be posting a photograph that captures the milestones of my family for that specific week. This is a way for me to challenge myself to grow in my photography skills and to document life before it passes me by.

The first milestone actually happened on new year's day! Our little 3 (almost 4) year old decided that he wanted to write his name all by himself. Here's Noah and his accomplishment:

Also dear friends of ours, the Willson family holds a special place in our hearts as they were both a big part of our wedding and have mentored and inspired us for many years. We have loved watching {M}, {K}, and {B} grow up and I can't believe how quickly the time has passed. We captured so many great photographs but here are my faves:

This session was really three sessions in one so I'm going to post it in three different parts. The first session was with the Self family. Some of our dearest and closest friends! We are and have always been blessed by them and their friendship. We have seen {J} and {M} grow up right before our eyes and have enjoyed spending lots of time with them and their parents. {J} & {M} love hanging out with our boys and we love them for that! I was so excited to have a session with ALL the {C} kids. They are all such sweet and kind children and their momms has a super cute style for them. The colors in these photographs turned out so bright and vibrant and it (almost) pained me to process any of them in black and white. Although, I couldn't resist and included a b&w anyway. What a gorgeous Fall day to be outside! The colors were AMAZING and the family I got to hang out with was so much fun. Little man {C} just turned 3 and he did wonderfully in his element. He was a big fan of all the toys I brought to capture his attention. His smile is contagious and I loved his silliness! Miss {R} is a natural! She has the smile down pat, is a tree climbing expert and such a great big sister.

After we had spent some time "posing" we gave the kids an opportunity to run around and play. They enjoyed chasing each other, tossing leaves, and lovin' on each other. What sweet siblings!

I have found that the first few pictures I take of a family (especially those with little ones) tend to be the best of the bunch. I enjoy taking the time necessary to "get the shot" but I've found that children tend to be at their best while they're still fresh. After all smiling can be exhausting!

When the Newton family asked me to capture some family photos for them I was honored considering that {M} is also a photographer and a dear friend of mine. I enjoyed spending the morning with them as we explored some new spots at the park I've had lots of requests for lately. Here are a few of my favorite images from our morning together:

the smith family

One of my favorite things about photography is blessing others with photographs that they will treasure forever. Not that they'd be treasured because of my talent or skill but because of the subjects in the photographs...the people that are loved beyond words. While I was processing the Smith family's photos I realized I have A LOT to learn about photography. At times it can be discouraging and overwhelming and then little bits of encouragement come along (through words from others or a breakthrough discovery on my own) that spur me on.

The Smiths have been good friends of ours for years. We have been blessed by their friendship and are so honored to be a part of their lives. So, I really wanted to bless them with some great photographs of their family. Their youngest {T} just turned one so we also set out to capture some unique one year old shots. Big brother {N} is full of energy and was very patient with all our requests for smiles.

Three months have past and sweet baby {H} has grown a ton! (Take a peek at how she's grown here.) Her mama and I enjoyed dressing her up in feathers, flowers, and tutus and she was quite the princess. She is such a happy girl and I was able to capture many precious smiles!

I recently learned how to shoot in manual mode (thanks Sandy!) and thought I would try my newest trick with sweet baby {M}. She is such a cuddly and precious little girl whose mama is one of Luke's biggest fans! {M} was a perfect subject. I took over 230 shots of her and had a REALLY hard time narrowing them down to process. One of my favorite "props" in the session was the flowery, strawberry outfit which was also worn by her 3 older sisters. So cool!

We have what we like to call the "dirt box" in our backyard. It was previously a vegetable garden planter box that was not blessed with seeds, water, and loving care this year. We have thrown around the idea of turning it into a sand box but were not ready for another project just yet. Thus, the dirt box was born. The boys LOVE digging in the dirt and flock to the dirt box every chance they get! On this particular day I happened upon Noah playing as usual in the dirt and was surprised by what I saw. He was not fazed one bit by the dirt mask on his face and continued right along with his dirt adventures. That's my boy!

My little one and a half year old is filled with energy and excitement. From the time he wakes up in the morning till the time he goes to bed at night he is nonstop movement! Being the mover and shaker that he is, it is VERY difficult to get him to sit still long enough to snap some shots of him. To capture the close-up of him I had to encourage him to run to me and sit at my feet while I snapped away looking at him upside down! Hey, whatever it takes to get the shot! A friend of mine asked me to take some pictures of her twelve day old baby girl. I was so excited to have another opportunity to photograph a newborn I jumped at the chance! She was very patient with us as we tried all sorts of poses and props. And she was the first to try out my newest prop...the ivory cocoon (the first thing I've ever knit).

Noah was born 18 days after {M} and with {M}'s family living right around the corner it was fun to watch them reach milestones together. {M} has since moved away and gained a baby brother just as Noah has. The mommies and all the boys got together just last week for a little fun at the park. Here are some pictures from our visit (and a couple from the past).

my new passion

I have been inspired by friends and strangers alike to pursue my renewed love for photography. I have been taking pictures and capturing life's little moments for as long as I can remember but now my memory capturing has turned into a passion to be better and grow in experience and love of photography. I especially love taking pictures of my kids and that, I must admit, has been the true subject of my passion. I have created this blog to post pictures that I adore and want to share with others. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed capturing them!
